Happy Earth Day

On April 22 the world celebrates Earth Day.  A day to reflect on nature, sustainability and the beautiful world where we live.  Whether you are blessed to live in a spectacular place like Jackson Hole, or prefer the high-rise metropolitan life of New York City, it is an excellent time to take a close look at what you are doing as an individual to improve the natural world around you.  It all starts with one person.

Earth Day also falls on the weekend when there is free entry to our National Parks.  What better way to immerse yourself into nature than to go for a bike ride, hike or picnic in Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone, or a Park near to you?  While in the Park, consider two or three things you can do to contribute to improving your lifestyle and the environment around you.

Here are 10 things to consider:

1. Do you recycle and/or recycle properly?
2. Next time you jump in the car, think about whether you could walk or ride your bike to your destination?
3. Do you use public transportation as an alternative?
4. Are you using sustainable lawn care practices?
5. Do you take reusable shopping bag not only to the grocery store, but for other shopping?
6. Can you purchase products locally instead of online, adding to air/trucking traffic?
7. Do you frequent farmers markets to support local producers?
8. If you have a remodeling project ahead of you, have you contacted Habitat Restore to take away usable building materials?
9. Contact your local energy provider about energy efficient lighting and energy resources available for your home and business.
10.  What sustainable practices could you implement at your job or in your business to improve the environment?

Earth Day isn't just one day a year.  We should all take the time to become educated on how little everyday things can improve the world around us.  Learn more about Earth Day, their educational programs, including 1% For The Planet and the local chapter, 1% For The Tetons.

And don't forget, get out and explore your National Parks this weekend!
