Some look for the thrill of adventure, others don't like skiing or the price of skiing at resorts, while many people want to explore new territory. The backcountry in the winter in Jackson Hole is beautiful, enticing and quiet with the throngs of tourists having returned home after the summer. But more importantly, it is dangerous.
Jackson Hole has lost too many friends, coworkers and family members to unfortunate accidents in the backcountry during the winter. And no matter how experienced you are as a skier or snowmobiler, no matter how much technology you have at your fingertips, Mother Nature always has a few tricks up her sleeve. Heavy snowfall, weather conditions and hazardous terrain can all lead to disastrous situations that you may have no control over.
Becoming educated and re-educating yourself on avalanche and snow safety is a priority if you plan to explore the backcountry this winter.
This Saturday, October 29th, the Teton County Search & Rescue is hosting the 2nd annual Wyoming Snow and Avalanche Workshop at the Center for the Arts from 8:15 am - 5:15 pm. Snow and avalanche professionals, as well as recreational backcountry users are encouraged to attend. A variety of speakers will discuss topics including, but not limited to, risk management, terrain evaluation and snow pack consideration. In addition, vendors and partners will be showcasing products, technologies and services to assist with backcountry safety.
The cost of the workshop is $40 and lunch will be provided by Pica's.
